Webster Technique for Pregnancy
Pregnancy is one of the most incredible things your body will ever do. It can also be one of the most uncomfortable. If you're dealing with low back pain during pregnancy, sharp pulling pains in your belly, hip pain that keeps you up at night, or sciatica that shoots down your leg, you are not alone, and you don't have to just push through it.
One of our favorite ways to support moms-to-be at Discover Wellness is the Webster Technique. Here's what it is, how it works, and why so many pregnant women in Lansdale and the surrounding area love it.
What Is the Webster Technique?
The Webster Technique is a gentle, pregnancy-specific chiropractic approach developed by Dr. Larry Webster in the 1980s. It focuses on two things:
Balancing the pelvis and sacrum. The sacrum is the triangle-shaped bone at the base of your spine that connects to your pelvis. When it's out of balance, it can put stress on the joints, muscles, and ligaments around it.
Releasing tension in the muscles and ligaments that support your uterus. This includes the round ligaments, the ones responsible for that sharp, stabbing pain many women feel on the sides of their belly.
The technique is gentle, specific, and designed with your changing body in mind. There's no twisting, no pressure on your belly, and we use pregnancy-friendly tables and pillows so you can relax comfortably at every stage.
Why Pregnancy Causes So Much Discomfort
Your body goes through huge changes in just nine months. A few of the big ones:
Hormones loosen your ligaments. A hormone called relaxin softens your ligaments so your pelvis can open for birth. It's a beautiful design, but it can also leave your joints less stable and more prone to pain.
Your center of gravity shifts forward. As your belly grows, your low back curves more to keep you balanced. That extra curve puts added strain on your spine and hips.
Your pelvis carries more load. Extra weight and a shifting posture can pull your pelvis out of balance, creating pain in your low back, hips, tailbone, and the front of your pelvis.
When your pelvis is balanced and your muscles and ligaments aren't overly tight, your body can adapt to these changes much more comfortably.
How the Webster Technique Helps
Low Back Pain During Pregnancy
Low back pain affects the majority of pregnant women at some point. By restoring balance to the sacrum and pelvis, the Webster Technique helps take pressure off your low back so you can move, work, and care for your family with less pain.
Round Ligament Pain Relief
Round ligament pain feels like a sudden, sharp pulling or stabbing sensation in the lower belly or groin, often when you stand up, roll over in bed, cough, or sneeze. The round ligaments support your uterus, and when the pelvis is out of balance, they can get pulled unevenly and become tight and painful. Gentle work to balance the pelvis and release these ligaments can bring real round ligament pain relief.
Pelvic Pain and SI Joint Pain
The SI joints (sacroiliac joints) are where your sacrum connects to your pelvis on each side. When they're irritated, you may feel pain on one side of your low back or buttock, especially when walking, climbing stairs, or getting out of the car. Many moms also feel pain in the front of the pelvis at the pubic bone. Balancing the pelvis helps these joints move the way they're meant to.
Sciatica During Pregnancy
Sciatica is pain, tingling, or numbness that travels from your low back or buttock down your leg. During pregnancy, tight muscles and an unbalanced pelvis can irritate the sciatic nerve. Easing that tension can help calm things down so you can walk and sleep more comfortably.
Hip Pain and Trouble Sleeping
When your hips ache every time you roll over, sleep becomes a struggle. Many of our moms tell us they sleep better once their pelvis feels more balanced and their muscles aren't so tight.
Preparing Your Body for Birth
A balanced pelvis gives your baby more room to move and settle into a good position. While no technique can promise a specific birth outcome, supporting healthy pelvic balance and function helps your body do what it was designed to do. Many moms tell us they feel more prepared, more connected to their bodies, and more confident heading into labor.
Is the Webster Technique Safe During Pregnancy?
Yes. The Webster Technique is gentle and was developed specifically for pregnancy. Adjustments use light, precise pressure, and we position you comfortably with pillows and a pregnancy-friendly table so there's never pressure on your belly.
We always recommend keeping your OB or midwife in the loop about your care. We're happy to work alongside your birth team.
When Should I Start?
You can begin chiropractic care at any point in your pregnancy. Some moms come in during the first trimester to stay ahead of discomfort, while others find us in the third trimester when back pain or pelvic pain really kicks in. The sooner your body is supported, the more comfortable your pregnancy can be, but it's never too late to start.
